When it comes to exploring as a pack, it's important that everyone is educated on bear safety. The best ways for kiddos to learn is by being outdoors, experiencing different adventures, taking in unique scenery and exploring new interests.
Here are a few tips to follow and consider when exploring in bear country with kids.
1. Know the area before heading out - If you're hiking in/around a park, checkout any posted trail reports & maps. Don't go off the trail!
2. Watch for signs of bear activity - lookout for tracks, scat and berry bushes nearby.
3. Hike in a group/make noise - Don't let your kids run ahead of you on a trail! Hiking in a group typically increases noise which alerts bears there are people nearby and keeps them away!
4. Carry bear spray - Whether it's a 20 minute walk or heading out on a camping trip, bring bear spray! Carry it in an easy access location so you can grab it incase of an attack! We suggest the Hey Bear Scat Belt for carry, and offer convenient bear spray rentals from our store in Big Sky Town Center.
